Reading and Phonics Scheme

At Twynham Primary school we teach reading through the synthetic phonics scheme ‘Letters and Sounds’ which is a daily activity from Reception to Year 2. From Year 3 the children read for comprehension using a range of group and individual texts. The children at this stage move from phonics into spelling patterns, which replaces the weekly phonics.

We also aim to encourage reading for pleasure and a motivation to read through daily reading book exchange and guided reading sessions in school. The role of parents is vital in developing good literacy skills and they are expected to support the work of the school. The children will bring reading books home on a daily basis. Parents are asked to hear their child read at home, comment on their progress and ensure that the books and reading records are returned to school every day. Each half term the children visit the local library to select books for the whole class to share.
