Design and Technology

"The function of design is letting design function." -- Micha Commeren, designer

Our aim at Twynham Primary School is to enable pupils to become creative and reflective learners who are able to express themselves fluently and confidently in a variety of different ways. Within our curriculum, Design and Technology will regularly contribute towards this by enabling pupils to respond thoughtfully to different learning and stimuli. Throughout their time at TPS, our young designers and engineers should be able to develop their cultural understanding in a range of contexts, D and T being one of them.

We value Design and Technology as an important part of the children’s entitlement to a broad and balanced curriculum. Design and Technology provides the children with the opportunities to develop and extend skills and an opportunity to express their individual interests, thoughts and ideas.

Design and Technology encourages children to learn to think and intervene creatively to solve problems both as individuals and as members of a team. At TPS, we encourage children to use their creativity and imagination, to design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values. We aim to, wherever possible, link work to other disciplines such as mathematics, science, engineering, computing and art. The children are given opportunities to reflect upon and evaluate past and present design technology, its uses and its effectiveness and are encouraged to become innovators and risk-takers.

As with all our primary subjects, the Twynham Learning Primary Curriculum Intent drives the children’s ambitious and engaging learning journey.
